How to study for JLPT N5

N5 is a starting point for checking the foundations of Japanese: basic characters, common vocabulary, simple grammar, short written sentences and familiar conversational situations. This page filters the question bank to N5 so you can repeat small sets without mixing in higher-level material. Question text and answer choices stay in Japanese because recognizing and understanding that Japanese is the purpose of the exercise. Begin with characters, vocabulary and grammar, then add reading and conversational tasks before trying the N5 mock exam.

Skills to review at N5

Check basic writing systems, common words, simple sentence patterns, the meaning of short texts, and the flow of slow familiar conversations.

Suggested workflow

Practice one area in small sets, repeat mistakes until they become stable, and then use the N5 mock exam to review the fundamentals together.
