Chuken is designed mainly for learners of Chinese whose first language is Japanese. Alongside reading, listening, speaking and writing, it places special emphasis on translation. Choose one of six levels, from Pre-4 to Level 1, and practise pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, translation and idioms by field.

The official system has six levels from Pre-4 to Level 1. Every level includes listening and written tests and tests translation between Chinese and Japanese. Pre-1 and Level 1 also have a second-stage exam, and Level 1 is offered only once a year in November. Always check the official site for current times, pass marks and dates.

  • Official exam questions are not reproduced. Use the official website for released papers and answers.
  • Lower levels emphasize pinyin, core vocabulary and basic grammar; higher levels emphasize usage, longer reading, translation and idioms.
  • Some translation, composition and listening skills are adapted to four-choice form, so this does not directly measure written-answer ability on the official test.
  • Items are reviewed when usage, spelling or the published scope changes.
